Perth Freezes at 3C: Early Winter Chill Hits City

People of Perth could be forgiven for thinking they had been transported to the North Pole with the mercury falling to a chilly 3C on Saturday morning. The metropolitan area experienced an early taste of winter as temperatures plummeted across the region.

Cold Conditions Across the Region

Cold conditions were felt widely, with about 5C recorded in the city, 3C at Perth Airport and Jandakot, and just 1C in Gingin. As autumn fades and winter closes in, these chilly conditions are expected to stick around for the near future.

Meteorologist Explains the Chill

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Joey Rawson explained that the past few days had been particularly chilly due to a cold front. “We’re currently in a cooler pattern but overnight temperatures should stay between about 6C and 10C,” Dr Rawson said. He added that a high-pressure system brought light winds and clear skies, which contributed to the significant temperature drop. “Clouds act like a blanket, so when they disappear, temperatures can drop significantly. It makes for cold nights like the one we just had.”

Warm Days Ahead

There is good news for those not ready to say goodbye to clear skies and sunny weekends. “The next week is looking near perfect — cool nights and really nice warm days around 22C to 23C,” Dr Rawson said. He described the upcoming week as “shaping up to be a really idyllic autumn week across Perth.”
