WA Set for $7.2B Christmas Splurge as Shoppers Plan to Spend Big
WA's $7.2 Billion Christmas Spending Spree Revealed

West Australians are gearing up to open their wallets wide this Christmas, with a staggering $7.2 billion forecast to flow through the state's tills during the festive season. This surge in consumer confidence signals a bumper period for local retailers, driven by a combination of tradition and pent-up demand.

A State of Confident Consumers

The data, released by the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) in partnership with Roy Morgan, paints a picture of robust economic sentiment. The projected $7.2 billion spend by WA shoppers represents a significant portion of the national total, which is expected to hit a record $67.35 billion between mid-November and Christmas Eve. This national figure marks a 1.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

ARA CEO Paul Zahra pointed to several factors fuelling this spending spree. "We're seeing a resilient consumer, particularly in Western Australia," he noted. The state's strong economic position, bolstered by the resources sector, is giving households the confidence to celebrate the holiday season with gusto. This spending is spread across the traditional festive categories, with food, hospitality, and gifts topping the list.

Where the Money is Going

The breakdown of spending reveals familiar festive priorities. Nationally, food is anticipated to be the biggest expense, with Australians forecast to spend $27.5 billion on groceries and festive feasts. This is followed closely by spending on hospitality, including meals out and takeaways, expected to reach $9.1 billion.

When it comes to gifts, the data shows:

  • Department stores are set to benefit from a projected $4.2 billion in sales.
  • Shoppers will spend around $4.1 billion on clothing, footwear, and personal accessories.
  • Other retail, which includes categories like cosmetics, jewellery, and recreational goods, is forecast to see $3.9 billion in spending.

For West Australians, this translates into busy shopping centres and high streets across Perth and regional hubs. Mr. Zahra emphasised that this period is "absolutely critical" for the viability of many small and medium-sized businesses, which rely on the festive trade to sustain them through quieter periods of the year.

Retailers Brace for the Rush

With such a significant influx of spending on the horizon, local retailers are making their final preparations. The ARA is encouraging businesses to ensure they are fully stocked and have adequate staff rostered on to manage the expected crowds. The association also advises shoppers to plan their purchases early to avoid disappointment with popular items and to spread out their spending where possible.

The strong forecast for WA aligns with broader national trends showing that, despite cost-of-living pressures in some parts of the country, the desire to celebrate Christmas with family and friends remains a powerful driver of consumer behaviour. The data period, covering November 14 to December 24, captures the entire peak shopping season, including major sales events like Black Friday, which has become an entrenched part of the Australian retail calendar.

This anticipated $7.2 billion Christmas spending spree is more than just a seasonal boost; it's a key indicator of West Australian economic confidence and a vital lifeline for the state's retail sector as it heads into the new year.
