State planning authorities have given the final approval for a major new retail development in Perth's fast-growing northern corridor. The $25 million first stage of the Alkimos Shopping Centre precinct has received the official go-ahead, promising to deliver essential services and new jobs to the community.
Unanimous Approval for Key Community Hub
The Outer Metro Development Assessment Panel voted unanimously in favour of the proposal at its meeting on Wednesday, 17 December 2025. The project, led by real estate investment group Centuria Capital, will rise on a 2.35-hectare site purchased from Development WA in a deal secured with the State Government in September.
Located within walking distance of the Alkimos train station, the centre is part of a much larger 181.7-hectare area earmarked for future commercial development. City of Wanneroo planning officers strongly endorsed the application, stating it would support the long-term growth of Alkimos and establish a solid foundation for the future city centre.
What the New Centre Will Include
The initial stage of Alkimos Central is designed as a comprehensive neighbourhood hub. The confirmed tenant mix includes:
- A full-line supermarket
- A liquor store
- A childcare centre licensed for up to 103 children
- A medical centre with capacity for ten practitioners
- Eight retail and commercial tenancies
- Seven cafes or food outlets
- One approved small bar licence
The development will also feature 301 car parking spaces and a significant landscaping plan that will see 207 new trees planted across the site.
A Design Focused on People and Place
Planning documents highlight a design that prioritises pedestrians and active street frontages. A central plaza is set to become the heart of the development, acting as a key gathering point for visitors and residents alike.
In their report, City of Wanneroo officers noted that concerns raised by an independent design review panel had been satisfactorily addressed. They described the proposal as "a functional and well-designed centre" that provides "a strong pedestrian focus" and the potential for high-standard landscaping.
Community and Political Welcome
Butler MLA Lorna Clarke, speaking earlier in the year when the land deal was finalised, welcomed the investment. She highlighted the community's call for more retail options and services.
"As a mum, I am so pleased to see more childcare, health services and green spaces coming to our Alkimos community," Ms Clarke said. "With a close connection to public transport, Alkimos Central will make our area an even better place to raise a family."
The new shopping centre is expected to open its doors to the public in 2027, serving the rapidly expanding population of Alkimos, located approximately 45 kilometres north of Perth's CBD.
