Australian households are being put on high alert for a festive season crime wave targeting online shopping deliveries. With a surge in Christmas presents and end-of-year sale purchases arriving at doorsteps, authorities warn that opportunistic thieves, known as 'porch pirates', are set to become more active.
Seasonal Spike in Brazen Thefts
Crime Stoppers Victoria Chief Executive, Stella Smith, confirms a disturbing trend that emerges each holiday period. "We see an increase in parcel theft around Christmas, with opportunistic thieves looking for any chance to strike quickly and quietly," Smith said. CCTV footage from previous incidents reveals thieves casually stealing parcels left unattended by couriers during daylight hours, often following delivery vans.
Secure Your Delivery: Official Advice
Australia Post is urging customers to take proactive steps to safeguard their goods. Kevin Zuccato, Australia Post General Manager Group Security, emphasised that once a parcel is delivered, its security becomes a police matter. "However, we're encouraging customers to consider our secure delivery options to reduce the risk of this happening," Zuccato stated.
The recommended precautions include:
- Using Australia Post's network of 24/7 Parcel Lockers for collection.
- Having items delivered to a nearby Post Office for safe pickup.
- Providing clear safe place instructions for home delivery if you won't be present.
Vigilance and Reporting Are Key
Both Australia Post and Crime Stoppers stress the importance of community awareness. "We know customers are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their parcels, especially ahead of Christmas, so please remain vigilant," Zuccato added. Stella Smith echoed this, noting that simple precautions and reporting suspicious behaviour can deter criminals. "If you have footage of suspicious activity or information about a theft, share it with Crime Stoppers to help prevent further incidents," Smith advised.
Anyone who believes their mail has been stolen should contact their local police or Crime Stoppers immediately.
