Global beauty giant Mecca and Australian fashion retailer Atomica are set to open massive new stores in Townsville, as major brands continue to capitalise on the city's rapid growth and booming retail sector.
Mecca's New Flagship Store
Mecca, which already operates a store in Townsville's Willows Shopping Centre, will open a new flagship store in the city's CBD. The new store, located on Flinders Street, will span over 500 square metres and feature a dedicated skincare studio, a fragrance bar, and a makeup application area. The store is expected to create up to 30 new local jobs.
“Townsville is a key market for us, and we are thrilled to expand our presence with this new flagship store,” said a Mecca spokesperson. “The city's growing population and strong retail performance make it an ideal location for our largest regional store.”
Atomica's Expansion
Meanwhile, Australian womenswear brand Atomica will open its first North Queensland store in Townsville's Stockland Shopping Centre. The 200-square-metre store will offer the brand's full range of clothing, accessories, and footwear. Atomica joins a growing list of national retailers expanding into Townsville, including H&M, Zara, and Uniqlo.
“We have seen incredible demand from our online customers in Townsville, and we are excited to finally open a physical store here,” said Atomica's CEO, Sarah Thompson. “The city's strong economy and growing population make it a natural fit for our brand.”
Economic Impact
Townsville's retail sector has experienced a surge in growth in recent years, driven by population increases, major infrastructure projects, and a booming local economy. According to the Townsville City Council, the city's retail spending has grown by over 20% in the past five years, outpacing the state average.
“The arrival of major retailers like Mecca and Atomica is a strong vote of confidence in Townsville's economic future,” said Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill. “These new stores will create jobs, attract shoppers from across the region, and further cement Townsville as a major retail destination in North Queensland.”
The new stores are expected to open in early 2025, with Mecca's CBD store launching in March and Atomica's Stockland store opening in April.
