Shoppers at a major Sydney retail hub were thrown into a state of panic and confusion after a section of a ceiling suddenly gave way during the busy pre-Christmas rush. The dramatic incident forced crowds to scramble for safety as debris rained down.
Chaos Erupts at Parramatta Road Complex
The collapse occurred on the second storey of the Lidcombe shopping centre, located on Parramatta Road in Sydney's inner-west. Witnesses described a scene of fear as rubble fell without warning, sending people running.
Fire Rescue NSW Inspector Steve Brown confirmed that crews were first alerted at 1.50pm on Wednesday after an automatic fire alarm was triggered inside the complex. "Almost immediately after that activation, triple zero calls began reporting a ceiling collapse and injuries," Inspector Brown said.
The emergency response escalated rapidly. Initially, two fire trucks and eight firefighters were dispatched, but this was quickly increased to five trucks and twenty firefighters, including specialist rescue teams.
Investigation and Immediate Aftermath
One person was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for their injuries. The shopping centre has been partially closed while authorities work to determine the exact cause of the failure.
Early indications from investigators suggest the collapse may be linked to a sprinkler head activating in the ceiling space, which led to significant flooding within the centre. However, the precise sequence of events remains unclear and is under active investigation.
