Feral Brewing's Innovative Response to WA Fuel Crisis
In a creative twist on the ongoing Western Australian fuel crisis, independent brewer Feral has launched a unique promotion that directly ties the cost of beer to petrol prices. The company is offering schooners of its popular Biggie Juice IPA for the combined daily average price of one litre of diesel and one litre of unleaded fuel at selected Perth pubs.
How the Promotion Works
Each week, Feral will select two pubs—one located north of the river and one south—to participate in the initiative. Based on Monday's average fuel prices of $1.94 for unleaded and $2.90 for diesel, a schooner would cost just $4.84, significantly less than the usual $7 to $8. As fuel prices fluctuate, so too will the cost of the beer, with the promotion continuing until diesel averages drop below $2.50.
Darcy White, Feral's head of marketing, explained the motivation behind the campaign. "With everything feeling a bit grim due to the conflict in the Middle East and the resulting jump in fuel prices, we wanted to inject a little fun into the week," he said. "It started as a quick idea to kick off the long weekend, but with fuel dropping a bit the past few days, it's now firmly in bargain territory."
Participating Pubs and Schedule
The promotion begins immediately, with participating pubs announced every Wednesday morning. Cheap beers will be available each Thursday from 5-7pm. The first venues to take part are The Gate Bar & Bistro at Cockburn Gateway Shopping City, south of the river, and The Ashby in Ashby Village, north of the river.
White noted the enthusiasm from pub operators, stating, "The guys at the Ashby and The Gate were keen as soon as we chatted to them about it; both are great pubs so it should be a good vibe."
Broader Context and Impact
This initiative comes at a time when consumers are grappling with rising costs across various sectors, making it a refreshing change to see at least one item decreasing in price. The promotion not only provides financial relief to patrons but also highlights how local businesses can adapt creatively to economic challenges.
By linking beer prices directly to fuel costs, Feral Brewing has turned a negative situation into an engaging community event, fostering a sense of camaraderie among Perth residents during a difficult period.
