The high-value gear, which vanished last week under suspicious circumstances, was safely recovered after a swift media investigation brought the case to public attention.

Uber Courier Allegedly Drives Off with Valuable Equipment

The incident began when an Uber courier driver was booked to deliver the camera equipment from Rentacam in Marrickville to a production company in Mona Vale. Staff loaded the gear, including a camera, four lenses, and multiple accessories valued at $47,455, into the driver's vehicle, expecting a straightforward delivery. However, moments after departure, the job was abruptly cancelled, and the driver allegedly disappeared with the equipment.

Peter Soltys, owner of Rentacam, expressed initial frustration, stating, "A couple of seconds later, hey Peter, the job was cancelled, I'm sending another Uber. And we were like, what do you mean you're sending another Uber?" The business immediately contacted Uber, but the company initially reported that both drivers involved denied having the items, claiming confusion over pickup.

Media Coverage Sparks Swift Return of Stolen Gear

After the business went public with its story, security footage capturing the Uber courier's arrival at the Marrickville location on March 26 was provided to police and media outlets. Following a 7NEWS report aired on Tuesday night, the courier came forward and arranged for the equipment's return. Soltys recounted the bizarre delivery method, saying, "He said, 'OK, my friend will just leave it on the street.' I said, 'What do you mean — you can't just leave it on the street.' But they literally just dropped it on the street and left it there."

Despite the unconventional return, all items were recovered intact. Soltys credited the media attention for the rapid resolution, emphasizing, "We are very, very, very grateful to Sam Payne and the whole Channel Seven." The business is now relieved, having avoided a significant financial loss.

Uber and Police Investigations Ongoing

Uber has responded to the incident, stating, "We're currently reviewing this internally and attempting to contact the delivery partner involved to clarify what happened and request the return of the item." After security video was provided, the company acknowledged the discrepancy in initial reports. Police were also involved, with vision of the driver's face, car, and number plate submitted six days prior to the return.

Soltys remains perplexed by the audacity of the alleged theft, questioning, "I just don't get it. How can somebody just pick up something and just like, yeah, here we go, that's it." The case highlights risks in using courier services for high-value deliveries, common in the film industry. Investigations by both Uber and authorities continue as the business resumes normal operations, thankful for the community and media support that led to this positive outcome.
