Western Bulldogs Defender Buku Khamis Emerges as Secret Weapon in Defence
Western Bulldogs defender Buku Khamis has solidified his role as the club's secret weapon in defence this season, with the Kennel urgently seeking to lock in his long-term future due to increasing interest from rival AFL teams. After eight years and 44 games in his AFL career, Khamis has finally established himself at the elite level, expressing confidence in his place in the competition.
"I do feel like I belong at AFL level," Khamis stated in a recent interview. "For me now, it's just about continuing to be consistent." Under the guidance of coach Luke Beveridge, who has utilized him in both defensive and offensive roles, the 26-year-old has integrated seamlessly into a backline that has performed exceptionally well this season, despite being a major uncertainty entering the year.
Defensive Connection and Team Unity
Khamis highlighted the strong bond within the defensive unit, noting, "The connection this year has been very solid. We're doing things off the field, and I feel like we're playing for each other a bit more." This cohesion has been pivotal in the Bulldogs' defensive success, contributing to their improved performance on the field.
Contract Negotiations and Past Interest
The defender's journey nearly took a different turn last year when he agreed to a three-year deal with Carlton. However, the Bulldogs rejected the Blues' offer of pick 42, keeping Khamis at the club. Reflecting on the situation, Khamis admitted, "It was actually very hard to want to leave, but it was more about seeking AFL opportunity because I feel like I'm an AFL player." He described the period as stressful, with uncertainty about his future.
Returning to the Bulldogs with 12 months left on his contract, Khamis has since been presented with a new offer. Yet, negotiations have not advanced significantly as his value continues to rise weekly, making his future a topic of ongoing discussion within the AFL community.
Upcoming Challenge Against Essendon
Looking ahead, Khamis and the Bulldogs' defence will face Essendon on Sunday night without concussed teammate Nate Caddy. This match presents another opportunity for Khamis to showcase his skills and reinforce his importance to the team's defensive strategy.
As the season progresses, Buku Khamis's emergence as a key defensive figure underscores his growth and the Bulldogs' strategic focus on securing his talents amid competitive pressures.
