Police Investigate Cause of Second Unit Fire on Hamilton South Street in a Month
Emergency crews were dispatched to Fowler Street in Hamilton South early Saturday morning following reports of a unit fire. This incident marks the second fire in a unit complex on this street within the past month, raising concerns and prompting a thorough police investigation.
Emergency Response and Fire Details
At approximately 7:20 am on Saturday, emergency services arrived at the scene after receiving calls about a fire in one of the units. A spokesperson from Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed that eight fire trucks and 30 firefighters were assigned to the incident. Smoke was visible emanating from a second-floor unit window, but crews successfully extinguished the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the complex.
The fire was brought under control by 8:30 am, after which the scene was handed over to police for further investigation. Authorities evacuated the unit block upon arrival, ensuring the safety of all residents.
Injuries and Medical Treatment
During the incident, one resident was transported to Calvary Mater Hospital due to smoke inhalation. NSW Ambulance reported that two patients were assessed at the scene: a man in his 20s and an elderly male. The male patient taken to the hospital was in stable condition, while the second patient did not require further medical treatment.
Police Investigation and Previous Incident
Police have established a crime scene and are continuing their investigations into the cause of the fire. This event follows a similar incident that occurred on March 5, when emergency services were called to Fowler Street after a smoke detector activated on the third floor of a unit complex around 2:45 am. Fire and Rescue NSW crews discovered a ground-floor unit ablaze, deploying nine trucks to the scene.
Firefighters managed to control the flames by approximately 3 am, and no injuries were reported. However, the ground-floor unit was rendered uninhabitable due to significant damage. The recurrence of fires on the same street within a short timeframe has heightened local awareness and underscores the importance of ongoing safety measures.
As authorities work to determine the origins of both fires, residents are urged to remain vigilant and ensure their properties are equipped with functional smoke detectors and fire safety protocols.
