Engineering and construction heavyweight Civmec has clinched a significant new package of work on BHP's major iron ore export expansion at Port Hedland, in a contract suite valued at up to $400 million.
Substantial Contract for Port Expansion Works
The fresh award, announced to the ASX, involves detailed design, procurement, fabrication, and site construction works for BHP's Port Hedland Inner Harbour Debottlenecking Project. This initiative is a key part of BHP's strategy to boost the capacity of its Western Australian iron ore export operations.
The contract suite is structured with firm orders worth approximately $170 million for immediate commencement. Furthermore, it includes options for additional work that, if fully exercised by BHP, could bring the total contract value to around $400 million.
Timeline and Local Employment Boost
Work under the newly secured contract is slated to begin immediately, with completion targeted for the latter part of the 2026 calendar year. This multi-year project is expected to provide a substantial boost to local employment and the regional economy.
Civmec will leverage its extensive Australian operations to deliver the project. Fabrication will be carried out at the company's Henderson facility south of Perth, while on-site construction and installation will take place at BHP's Port Hedland operations in the Pilbara. This approach underscores Civmec's integrated national delivery model.
A Strategic Win for Civmec
Civmec's Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Tallon, highlighted the contract's importance. He stated the award reinforces the strong, ongoing relationship between Civmec and BHP, building on a history of successful project delivery in Western Australia's critical resources sector.
"This award is a testament to our team's capability and our established track record in delivering major projects for BHP," Mr. Tallon said. "We are proud to be entrusted with this significant package of work which will utilise our full suite of in-house capabilities, from detailed design through to fabrication and construction."
The Port Hedland Inner Harbour Debottlenecking Project is designed to incrementally increase the throughput of BHP's iron ore supply chain. By removing logistical bottlenecks, BHP aims to lift its system capacity to 330 million tonnes per annum, cementing Port Hedland's position as one of the world's premier bulk export terminals.
This major contract win positions Civmec at the heart of one of Australia's most important mining infrastructure expansions, supporting both immediate job creation and long-term export growth for the national economy.
