Contractors in Townsville have sparked a major safety alert after being observed pressure washing asbestos roofs, a practice that can release dangerous fibres into the air. The Queensland Government has issued an urgent warning to homeowners and businesses to ensure proper safety measures are followed when dealing with asbestos-containing materials.
Health Risks of Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos fibres, when inhaled, can cause serious diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Pressure washing an asbestos roof can disturb the material, releasing microscopic fibres that can be inhaled by workers and nearby residents. The risk is particularly high in older homes built before the 1990s, when asbestos was commonly used in roofing and building materials.
Authorities Issue Warning
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has reminded all contractors and property owners that it is illegal to use high-pressure water blasters on asbestos cement roofs without proper controls. The only safe way to clean an asbestos roof is through low-pressure methods or by hiring licensed asbestos removal professionals.
Local resident John Smith expressed concern after seeing contractors pressure washing a neighbour's roof. "I saw dust and water flying everywhere, and I knew that roof had asbestos. It's terrifying to think what might have been released into the air," he said.
What Homeowners Should Do
Homeowners are urged to check if their roof contains asbestos before any cleaning or renovation work. If asbestos is present, they should hire a licensed asbestos assessor to test the material and a licensed removalist to handle any disturbance. The Queensland Government provides a list of licensed professionals on its website.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Contractors who fail to comply with safety regulations can face significant fines and legal action. The maximum penalty for breaching asbestos safety laws in Queensland is over $3.8 million for corporations and $600,000 for individuals, with possible imprisonment for serious offences.
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is conducting inspections across Townsville to ensure compliance. Anyone who witnesses unsafe asbestos handling is urged to report it immediately.
