Support for gas exploration off the coast of the Hunter region has surged to 50 percent in 2026, according to the latest polling data. This marks a significant increase from 37 percent in 2023 and 43 percent in 2025, reflecting a steady upward trend in community backing for the activity.
Declining Opposition
Opposition to offshore gas exploration has dropped sharply over the same period. In both 2023 and 2025, 22 percent of Hunter residents opposed the activity, but that figure has now fallen to just 16 percent in 2026. The remaining respondents were undecided or held no strong opinion.
Broader Support for Gas Development
Beyond specific offshore projects, the poll reveals overwhelming support for the broader development of Australia's gas reserves. A striking 78 percent of Hunter Region voters now support exploring, developing, and using more of the nation's gas resources—up from 63 percent in the previous year. Only 4 percent of respondents opposed this expanded gas activity, while 18 percent remained neutral.
These findings indicate a growing acceptance of gas as a key component of the region's energy mix, with implications for future policy and investment decisions. The Hunter region, known for its industrial and energy heritage, appears to be increasingly aligning with national discussions on energy security and economic development.
