Lake Imaging staff at St John of God Geelong Hospital to strike over pay
Geelong hospital imaging staff to strike in pay dispute

Medical imaging services at a major Geelong hospital are set for significant disruption as staff prepare to take industrial action in a prolonged pay dispute.

24-Hour Strike Planned for Next Week

Radiographers, sonographers, and support staff employed by Lake Imaging at St John of God Geelong Hospital will walk off the job for a full 24 hours next Wednesday. The strike action, organised by the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU), is scheduled to commence at 7am on May 15 and conclude at 7am on Thursday, May 16.

This industrial action follows what the union describes as "months of failed negotiations" with the employer over a new enterprise agreement. Staff have reportedly been working without a settled agreement since the previous one expired.

The Core of the Pay Dispute

The central issue fuelling the strike is a disagreement over wage increases. The AMWU is advocating for pay rises that it states will help staff keep pace with the rising cost of living. The union has criticised Lake Imaging's latest offer as insufficient, arguing it fails to address the financial pressures faced by healthcare workers.

In a statement, the AMWU highlighted that the decision to strike was not taken lightly by members, who are dedicated to patient care. However, they feel compelled to take a stand for a fair and reasonable wage outcome after negotiations reached a stalemate.

Expected Impact on Hospital Services

The 24-hour work stoppage is expected to cause considerable disruption to medical imaging services at the St John of God Geelong Hospital campus. This includes potential delays or cancellations for procedures such as:

  • X-rays
  • CT scans
  • Ultrasounds
  • MRI scans

While emergency and urgent care services will likely be prioritised, many non-urgent outpatient appointments and elective procedure scans may be rescheduled. The hospital and Lake Imaging are expected to enact contingency plans to manage the impact on critical patient care.

A spokesperson for St John of God Health Care acknowledged the planned action by Lake Imaging staff and indicated the hospital was working with the provider to minimise disruption for patients. They advised patients with upcoming appointments to contact the hospital if they have concerns.

The strike action underscores ongoing tensions in the healthcare sector regarding wages and conditions, as workers seek remuneration that reflects their skilled roles and the current economic climate. All eyes will be on whether this industrial action prompts a renewed negotiation effort before next Wednesday's deadline.
