South Australian Man Charged in Elaborate Fuel Theft Operation

A South Australian man has been formally charged in connection with a sophisticated and prolonged series of petrol thefts that spanned several months, resulting in over $12,000 worth of stolen fuel. Police allege the crimes involved the use of cloned registration plates, repeated drive-offs without payment, and a calculated effort to conceal the vehicle's identity.

Months of Thefts Across Adelaide's Northern Suburbs

Detectives have been actively investigating up to 20 separate fuel theft incidents that occurred across Adelaide between late December 2025 and April 2026, with the majority concentrated in the northern suburbs. Authorities linked these offences to a silver Mazda SUV, which was consistently seen bearing unassigned or cloned registration plates throughout the crime spree.

Investigators detailed that the driver repeatedly filled the SUV with unleaded fuel and, in some instances, pumped diesel into a large tank stored in the back of the vehicle. Police emphasised that several of the diesel thefts individually exceeded $1,000, contributing to a total stolen fuel value surpassing $12,000.

Deliberate and Calculated Criminal Endeavour

"These thefts were not opportunistic," police stated on Thursday. "They were deliberate and calculated in their endeavour to commit these thefts and hide the identity of their vehicle." This statement underscores the premeditated nature of the crimes, highlighting the suspect's efforts to avoid detection through fraudulent means.

Northern District officers successfully identified the suspect vehicle and conducted a visit to the registered owner's residence in Two Wells, located north of Adelaide. During this operation on Tuesday night, they allegedly located the Mazda along with a number of registration plates, leading to the arrest of a 36-year-old man.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigations

The 36-year-old man was arrested and charged with three counts of theft. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on May 29. Police have indicated that further charges may be forthcoming, as investigations are still ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to assist with the case.

In a related warning, police highlighted the significant dangers associated with transporting large quantities of fuel in makeshift containers. "Carrying large amounts of fuel in this way places the driver in danger, and it places other road users in danger," they cautioned, pointing out the serious safety risks posed by such practices.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which individuals may go to commit theft, as well as the vigilant efforts of law enforcement to track and apprehend those involved in organised criminal activities.
