A substantial fire is engulfing a home in Wollongong, with over 20 firefighters working to control the flames and one individual receiving medical attention from paramedics.
Firefighters respond to Evans Street blaze
As flames burst through the windows of the weatherboard residence on Evans Street, numerous bystanders contacted emergency services. Firefighters observed thick, black smoke billowing into the air as they rushed to the location around 2:15pm on Thursday, April 30, according to Fire and Rescue NSW acting Superintendent Steve Brown.
“It’s quite a significant fire to put up that amount of smoke,” he said. “The single-level home was well alight and they’re attacking the fire with hose lines. They’ve done a search inside the home and given it the all clear.”
A male who was inside the home at the time of the fire managed to escape and was treated by paramedics outside the property before being transported to hospital. His age is currently unknown.
Fire contained, but damage extensive
By 2:50pm, the fire was contained and no longer posed a threat to nearby properties, though it will take considerable time to fully extinguish. The house has suffered significant structural damage, including a partial roof collapse. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
This is a developing story. More details will be provided as they become available.
