The ACT government has announced a targeted parking blitz at sports grounds across Canberra, with a particular focus on soccer clubs. The initiative aims to address ongoing issues of illegal parking and traffic congestion during peak game times.
New Enforcement Measures
From next month, parking officers will increase patrols at popular sports venues, issuing fines for vehicles parked in no-standing zones, on footpaths, or obstructing emergency access. The crackdown follows complaints from residents and local businesses about game-day chaos.
Impact on Soccer Clubs
Several Canberra soccer clubs, including those in Belconnen and Tuggeranong, will be affected. Club officials have expressed concern that the fines could deter families from attending matches. However, the government insists the measures are necessary for safety and traffic flow.
Transport Minister Chris Steel stated, "We want everyone to enjoy sport safely. Illegal parking creates hazards for pedestrians and cyclists, and blocks emergency vehicles." The blitz will run for three months, after which the government will review its effectiveness.
Alternative transport options, such as shuttle buses and park-and-ride facilities, are being promoted to ease the burden on drivers. The government also encourages carpooling and the use of public transport to reduce congestion.
Community Reaction
Local soccer associations have called for more parking infrastructure rather than fines. "We need more spaces, not more penalties," said a spokesperson for Capital Football. Meanwhile, residents welcome the crackdown, citing improved safety on game days.
The blitz is part of a broader ACT government strategy to manage traffic around sports precincts, with future measures possibly including timed parking permits and digital signage for real-time parking availability.
