Woden Light Rail Stage 2B Route Finalised After Public Input
Woden Light Rail Stage 2B Route Confirmed

The ACT government has officially confirmed the route for Stage 2B of the light rail extension to Woden, incorporating changes based on community feedback. The revised alignment will now include a stop at the Canberra Hospital, a significant addition that was widely requested during the consultation period.

Route Details and Key Changes

The confirmed route will run from the current terminus at the City, through Barton, and then along Adelaide Avenue to Woden. A new stop will be located at the Canberra Hospital, providing direct access for patients, visitors, and staff. The government stated that this change addresses a major need identified in the feedback.

Other adjustments include modifications to the alignment near the Parliamentary Triangle to minimize impacts on heritage and green spaces. The government also committed to further noise mitigation measures along the corridor.

Community Engagement

Over 1,200 submissions were received during the public consultation period, which ran from March to May. Key concerns raised included the need for hospital access, noise management, and the preservation of trees and parklands. The government says these have been addressed in the final plan.

Transport Minister Chris Steel said that the feedback was instrumental in shaping the final route. “We listened to the community and have made changes that will deliver better outcomes for Canberra,” he said.

Next Steps

The government will now proceed with detailed design and planning, with construction expected to begin in 2025. The project is part of the broader light rail network expansion, with Stage 1 to Gungahlin already operational and Stage 2A to Commonwealth Park under construction.

Once complete, Stage 2B will connect Woden to the city, reducing travel times and providing a sustainable transport option. The government estimates the project will be completed by 2030.
