Sunshine Coast Airport's $460M Expansion to Create 3400 Jobs by 2040
Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Gets Green Light

The Sunshine Coast Airport has received official approval for a transformative Gateway Precinct that will reshape travel and commerce across the Queensland region. The major expansion promises to deliver new facilities and services that will significantly enhance the airport experience for both locals and visitors.

What the Gateway Precinct Will Deliver

The approved development includes comprehensive facilities designed to serve both travellers and the local community. The precinct will feature a hotel with up to 250 rooms, multiple retail spaces, childcare services, medical facilities, and various commercial developments.

Airport CEO Chris Mills emphasised that the project will create a welcoming arrival and departure experience while unlocking substantial tourism and business opportunities. "It will help to unlock tourism and business opportunities that will attract investment, support regional growth and create jobs for the region," Mills stated.

The terminal expansion is already underway and is expected to be completed by 2027. Additional developments will include shopping and other services to benefit both the local community and travellers passing through one of Australia's fastest-growing regional hubs.

Economic Impact and Regional Benefits

The economic projections for the airport expansion are substantial. By 2040, the airport is expected to directly contribute $460 million to Australia's GDP and support more than 3400 jobs across the region.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson highlighted how the expansion would strengthen accessibility and competitiveness for travellers and businesses. "With additional international flights arriving and departing, the expansion of the airport is vital to ensuring our region remains accessible and competitive with other holiday destinations," Simpson said.

The approval comes at a strategic time, following Jetstar's announcement of direct flights from Sunshine Coast to Bali, with connections to Singapore. This international connectivity boost positions the region for increased tourism and business traffic.

Alignment with Olympic and Regional Growth

Economic Development Queensland CEO Julian Simmonds confirmed the project aligns with both national and regional growth priorities. The 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games served as a key consideration in planning the world-class airport precinct.

"With the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 and a fast-growing population, it is vital to develop a world-class airport precinct that connects communities and welcomes visitors," Simmonds explained.

Artist impressions of the development showcase not only terminal upgrades but also a new elevated light rail station, indicating the comprehensive transport integration planned for the precinct.

The airport, which already connects to five domestic and international destinations, will continue to drive tourism growth while giving businesses the confidence to invest in the region according to project proponents.
