Melbourne Bus Driver Terminated Following Disturbing Incident Involving Schoolboy

A bus driver in Melbourne has been dismissed from his position after a 12-year-old boy became trapped in the automatic doors of a bus and was dragged for approximately 350 metres along a suburban road. The alarming event occurred around 8am on March 16 in Wheelers Hill, located in the city's south-eastern suburbs, as the young student was on his way to school.

Footage shared by the boy's mother captures the terrifying moment when the student became caught in the doors and was carried alongside the moving vehicle. It is understood that the driver only became aware of the situation and stopped after the boy had been dragged along Brandon Park Drive for a significant distance.

Company Response and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Ventura Bus Lines confirmed that the driver involved no longer works for the company following a thorough internal investigation. "This is a very distressing incident, and we will continue to support the passenger and family at this time," the spokesperson stated. "The safety of our passengers is our priority. We have emphasised our safety protocols with all drivers and will implement a review to enhance driver training programs."

The spokesperson added that after a full investigation and internal disciplinary procedures, the driver's employment was terminated. The bus driver eventually noticed the boy, identified as Nathaniel, stuck on the side of the vehicle and pulled over to safety.

Impact on the Boy and Family

The boy, who had recently started Year 7, escaped serious physical injury, but his mother, Grace Pan, revealed that he remains deeply affected by the traumatic experience. Pan explained to media that her son survived by keeping his feet off the ground during the ordeal. "Nathaniel did say when I passed the cars parked at the side, I would bring my feet in. If not, I would have hit the car," she said.

Pan described how the incident has left her son with ongoing anxiety. "When he sees a bus pass by... he said my hands just shake uncontrollably, and to hear that, as a mum, would you not feel upset and like just also helpless?" She also questioned the safety features of the bus, stating, "I don't understand how there could not be a safety feature of their bus to identify that and alarm the bus driver."

She expressed relief at her son's survival, calling it nothing short of a miracle. "He's really, really lucky. Angels are really watching over him. There's nothing short of a miracle," Pan added.

Government and Official Reactions

Victorian Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams commented on the incident, noting that it clearly had not met safety expectations and confirming the driver's termination. "It clearly hasn't met expectations of safety that we would expect from our operators, and Ventura have made that call themselves in standing down the driver," she said.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan described the footage as "shocking" and expressed her concern for the boy and his family. "Every parent wants to make sure their child gets to school safely, and that footage was just a shocking incident," she stated. "My thoughts are with that young boy and his family and carers, who are clearly distressed."

Premier Allan announced that the government is taking steps to provide further support. "I've asked the minister for the Transport Accident Commission, I've asked him to direct the TAC to reach out to the family to see what further support can be provided," she explained. "It's clearly had an impact; it will have an impact on him, so we want to reach out and support him and his family network."

Victoria Police confirmed they are aware of the incident, which was not initially reported, and that inquiries are ongoing to investigate the circumstances further.
