Atwea College has announced the closure of its training division, putting 21 jobs at risk. The decision comes amid tighter government regulations on vocational education funding.
The college cited changes to VET FEE-HELP requirements, including more stringent language, literacy and numeracy testing, as a key factor in the closure. The new rules, effective from January 1, have made it difficult for the institution to continue operating its training programs.
Affected staff were informed of the decision recently, with the college stating that every effort was made to minimize job losses before resorting to closures. The training division's operations will be wound down over the coming months.
Students currently enrolled in the affected programs will be offered alternative arrangements, including transfers to other providers or online study options. Atwea College emphasized its commitment to ensuring students can complete their qualifications.
The Independent Education Union expressed disappointment over the job losses and criticized the lack of prior consultation with employees. The union has called for an urgent meeting with management to discuss support for affected workers.
