Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75: Total Eclipse of the Heart Singer

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh pop icon best known for her 1983 power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart, has died at the age of 75. Her career spanned five decades, from her 1970s breakthrough to Eurovision and beyond.

Early Career and Vocal Surgery

Tyler's debut single My! My! Honeycomb failed to chart in 1976, but its follow-up, Lost in France, became a success. As the decade continued, her voice hardened after vocal surgery, and her aesthetic toughened as she embraced rock and country music. She also scored hits with disco-tinged songs like (The World Is Full of) Married Men.

1980s Global Success

The early 1980s were her most commercially successful period. By working with Jim Steinman, who had helmed Meat Loaf's biggest hits, Tyler launched into a new level of success with the epic Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983. The following year, she had another huge smash with Holding Out for a Hero, from the Footloose soundtrack. She also duetted with Shakin' Stevens on A Rockin' Good Way (to Mess Around and Fall in Love), a Top 10 hit.

Later Career and Eurovision

By the early 1990s, Tyler's success was predominantly in continental Europe. She collaborated with Mike Oldfield on his album Islands in 1987. In the 2000s, she returned to the UK charts with a greatest hits album and had a huge hit in France with a re-recording of Total Eclipse of the Heart with Kareen Antonn. She performed at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, placing 19th with Believe in Me. The high-profile performance lifted her career, and she was soon back in the UK album charts.

Personal Life and Legacy

Tyler was married to Robert Sullivan, a property developer and former British judo Olympian. She split her time between Swansea and the Algarve, Portugal. She continued live performances well into her 70s, including a concert in Berlin in May 2025. In 2023, she published her memoir, Straight from the Heart. Tyler attributed her indefatigable work ethic to her working-class upbringing near Swansea, saying, 'I do an awful lot [of performances] because I feel other people would love to be offered what I'm offered.'
