The US State Department has confirmed the death of an American diplomat assigned to the embassy in Yangon, Myanmar, though it declined to provide further details. The diplomat was found dead approximately two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence + Hotel, a facility popular among diplomats and businesspeople, located about 1.5 kilometres from the US embassy.
According to three individuals within the diplomatic community in Myanmar who spoke on condition of anonymity, police are treating the case as a possible homicide. A Thai woman has been taken into custody in connection with the investigation.
The US embassy in Yangon and US officials in Thailand referred inquiries to the State Department, which confirmed the death but offered no additional information. 'Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time,' the department stated in an email to the Associated Press.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, remains embroiled in conflict following the military-led government's ousting of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. The country faces ongoing fighting between government forces and militias organised by ethnic minority groups and pro-democracy forces.
Authorities in Myanmar generally provide minimal information to the media. The duty officer at the police station responsible for the area where the Sakura hotel is located refused to comment and terminated the call with an AP reporter. The manager of the Sakura hotel also declined to comment.
The Thai embassy in Yangon and Thailand's foreign ministry refused to disclose whether they had provided consular support to the suspect or offer any additional information.
