Teen charged over death of international student in Perth

More than a month after an international student died in a shopping centre carpark, a teenager has been charged. Komalpreet Kaur, 19, was hit by a blue Hyundai i30 at Bentley Plaza in Bentley, Perth, around 11.30pm on May 16.

Details of the Incident

The pedestrian was rushed from the city’s southeast to Royal Perth Hospital with critical injuries but could not be saved. On Saturday, the alleged driver, a 19-year-old Forrestfield man, was charged with careless driving causing death.

Victim's Background and Tributes

Kaur, who was studying community services at Stanley College, had moved from India in July 2025 and was planning to build a life in Australia. Grieving friends described her as "charming, always smiling. She filled our lives with happiness," friend Sakshi Rupal told 7NEWS.com.au.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses in the carpark described a crowd working together to lift the vehicle off the injured teen. "I wanted to flip that car," one said. "We kind of got it up once, got it up a second time, and someone’s dragged her out."
