Robot Vacuum Explosion Leaves Perth Man with Life-Threatening Burns
Robot Vacuum Explosion Burns Perth Man Severely

A 25-year-old Perth man, Lachie Perrem, is fighting for his life after his robotic vacuum cleaner exploded, causing severe burns to 75% of his body. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at his home in Brabham, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia.

Freak Accident Details

The explosion, which fire investigators believe was caused by a fault in the robotic vacuum, triggered a blaze that spread from the kitchen to the living room, destroying the home. Images from inside show blown-out windows and blackened walls. Mr Perrem was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital's burns unit, where he has undergone several operations and remains sedated in critical condition, with bandages covering most of his body.

His fiancée has been by his bedside, and his mother, Fiona Perrem, who lives in Queensland, is planning to travel to Western Australia. The explosion also left Mr Perrem, his fiancée, and their housemates homeless.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

The vacuum is being inspected by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety. According to 7NEWS, there have been three recorded instances of robotic vacuums causing fires in Western Australia over the past two years. This raises questions about the safety of such devices and whether further regulation is needed.

Community Support via GoFundMe

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Mr Perrem financially. As of now, it has raised over $17,000. His mother, Fiona Perrem, wrote on the page: "While our focus is on helping him survive and heal, life outside the hospital doesn’t stop. Bills continue to arrive and he still has financial commitments, including the repayments on his car. We want to ease as much of that burden as possible so that, when he wakes and begins his recovery, he can focus entirely on getting better instead of worrying about losing everything he has worked so hard for."

The incident highlights the potential dangers of household appliances and the importance of product safety. The community is rallying to support the young couple during this devastating time.
