Tony Modra Leaves Hospital After Life-Threatening Crash

AFL legend Tony Modra has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home following a life-threatening crash that left him with severe facial injuries. The 57-year-old former Adelaide and Fremantle star was driving near his cattle property south of Adelaide last month when a fallen tree branch smashed through his truck's windshield.

Modra, who initially was in critical condition and required multiple surgeries, provided an update on his recovery in a statement on Tuesday. He expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the AFL community and the public.

Modra's Statement on Recovery

"Over the past couple of weeks, I've been overwhelmed by the kindness and care shown to me and my family," Modra said. "I have left hospital to continue my recovery at home and only now starting to wrap my head around the incredible amount of support and well wishes that have come our way."

He specifically thanked those who provided first aid at the scene, emergency responders, and medical staff. "My progress has been encouraging and we kindly ask that our privacy continues to be respected as we focus on my rehabilitation. Thank you."

Outpouring of Support

The AFL world has rallied around Modra since the accident. During Adelaide's match against Melbourne at Adelaide Oval last month, fans displayed the original 'GOD-RA' banner from the 1990s to show their support. Modra also recorded a pre-recorded message for the Showdown, thanking both Crows and Port Adelaide fans.

"I've heard I've had a lot of support, not just Crows fans but Port fans as well, so I'd just like to thank everybody," he said in the message, which was played two weeks after the accident.

Modra's AFL Legacy

Modra was one of the most dominant forwards of the 1990s, kicking 588 goals from 165 games for Adelaide and Fremantle. He booted 129 goals in the 1993 season and won the Coleman Medal in 1997. He also earned the Mark of the Year on three occasions. His impact on the game and the affection fans hold for him were evident in the widespread concern following his crash.
