A routine swim for a loggerhead turtle took an extraordinary turn when a wild storm swept the ocean dweller into the Swan River, leaving wildlife experts baffled.
Discovery at Point Walter Boat Ramp
A Perth man, identified only as Kyle, arrived at the Point Walter boat ramp in Attadale over the weekend when he stumbled upon a large female turtle floating on its back nearby. Loggerhead turtles are an endangered animal primarily found in warm ocean environments, so the discovery of the creature inside the colder WA river surprised locals.
“Loggerhead turtles are ocean-going animals and are not typically found in rivers, making her presence in the Swan River particularly concerning,” a wildlife expert said.
Rescue Efforts
Most witnesses believed the turtle was dead, but Kyle observed the turtle trying to breathe in the river. Locals at the boat ramp quickly sprang into action, loading the 47.5kg turtle into the back of Kyle’s car before he raced her to the WA Wildlife Hospital in Bibra Lake.
By the time the 15-year-old turtle arrived at the veterinary facility, she was critically ill and unresponsive. The turtle underwent emergency resuscitation and received a range of treatments, but experts said her prognosis was “very poor”.
Sad Outcome
Unfortunately, after days of medical intervention and care, the turtle died from her condition. Experts believe the recent storm surge that has rocked Perth contributed to the displacement of the turtle.
Wildlife Warning Issued
The unusual discovery has prompted WA wildlife officials to issue a strong warning to residents about distressed wildlife during severe weather. “With the recent stormy weather, please keep an eye out for displaced or distressed wildlife, particularly seabirds, sea turtles, and sea snakes,” a spokesperson said. “Severe weather can leave marine animals exhausted, disoriented and far from where they should be.”
More than 70 per cent of loggerhead turtles in Western Australia are found in Shark Bay, which is Australia’s biggest colony of the reptiles.
