Misty Roberts, the former mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, apologized to her victim in court on Tuesday after being sentenced to 90 days in jail for raping a 16-year-old boy. The 44-year-old had faced up to 17 years in prison but was convicted earlier this year of two felonies: carnal knowledge of a juvenile (statutory rape) and indecent behavior with a juvenile.
Details of the Crime
Roberts sexually assaulted the underage victim at her home in July 2024. The incident occurred during a pool party where both were consuming alcohol. At the time, Roberts had been serving as mayor of DeRidder since 2018.
Sentencing Conditions
As part of her sentence, Roberts must register as a sex offender and pay $5,000 in fines. Upon release, she will undergo regular drug screenings, as well as psychotropic and psychological therapy, according to KPLC. The outlet also reported that Roberts received two five-year suspended sentences, to be served concurrently unless she violates parole.
Courtroom Apology
Addressing the court, Roberts stated: “I blame myself then, I blame myself today, and I will blame myself for the rest of my life … I let a lot of people down, and I am the only person responsible for that.” She also directly apologized to the victim’s family, saying: “To the [victim’s] family, I am sorry. I can’t give back the high school days… I can’t take away the embarrassment that so many mean people on the internet have put them through.”
Victim Impact Statement
In a powerful impact statement, the victim’s mother described Roberts as a predator: “This predator was not hiding in a van carrying candy or a puppy. This danger came from a predator with hair extensions, high heels, Botox, and other modifications.” She recounted finding her son crying alone in his room at night and noted that “every social event carried questions no teenager should have to ask … Half of his high school experience was taken from him.” She concluded with a direct message to Roberts: “Stay the hell away from my family.”
Legal and Community Impact
The case has drawn significant attention in Louisiana, highlighting the abuse of power by a public official. Roberts’s sentencing is seen as a step toward justice for the victim, though many believe the 90-day sentence is lenient given the severity of the crime.
