A 28-year-old man from Canberra has been extradited to New South Wales following an alleged attempted armed robbery at the Tarago Hotel earlier this month. The incident occurred around 9:40 pm on April 6, when police allege the man entered the pub on Goulburn Street, brandished a knife, and demanded cash from the bartender.
Arrest and Extradition
The suspect was arrested by ACT Policing on April 9 and faced the ACT Magistrates Court, where he was remanded in custody. On April 12, he was extradited to NSW and taken to Goulburn Police Station. He was later charged with attempted armed robbery, enter premises with intent to commit a serious indictable offence, and possess a knife in a public place.
Police Investigation
NSW Police from the The Hume Police District conducted the investigation, with assistance from ACT Policing. Detective Chief Inspector Jason Darcy said, “This was a frightening incident for the staff and patrons at the Tarago Hotel, and we are pleased to have made a swift arrest.” The man was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Goulburn Local Court on May 3.
Impact on Community
The Tarago Hotel, a local landmark in the small town of Tarago about 50 kilometres north-east of Canberra, was closed for a short period following the incident but has since reopened. The community has expressed relief at the quick police response and extradition.
