Melbourne's Cold Week Ends with Weekend Rain

Week of Fog and Frost

Melbourne has just endured a bitterly cold week, with temperatures struggling to reach double digits on some days. Monday started at a sharp 3.2C but climbed to 14.3C under sunny skies. However, Tuesday was the coldest day, with a blanket of foggy low cloud settling over the city and refusing to budge until the afternoon. The temperature began at 3.7C and only scraped into double figures at 1.20pm, peaking at just 11.0C.

Wednesday's fog lifted late morning, leaving a chilly 10C at lunchtime before afternoon sunshine pushed the mercury to 14.1C. Thursday brought another thick fog, with temperatures at 4.5C by 10am. Sunshine eventually broke through, and the city was set to reach about 14C in the hazy afternoon.

Slight Improvement Friday

Friday looks a little different, with fog clearing faster as winds are not as light. A northerly airflow all day could see Melbourne climb to 16C in the sunshine. This slight lift in wind signals the end of the lengthy, settled pattern. High pressure has been parked over southeastern Australia all week, causing foggy mornings, cold conditions, and barely-there winds.

Weekend Cold Front Brings Rain

A cold front will barrel through on Saturday, ramping up the wind and ending the frosty, foggy mornings. After nearly a week without rain—rare for Melbourne in winter—umbrellas will be needed. Saturday stays dry for much of the day, before hit and miss showers develop mid to late afternoon. A period of rain moves in for Saturday night, which will be the wettest part of the weekend.

According to weather reports, it's quite a contrast from week to weekend, but after days of fog and frost, a cold front sweeping through almost feels like a refresh.
