Jill Biden's Ex-Husband Charged with Murder of His Wife

William Stevenson, the ex-husband of former US first lady Jill Biden, has been arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, Linda Stevenson. Officials announced the charges on Tuesday, following a grand jury indictment filed in Delaware.

On 28 December 2025, police responded to a reported domestic dispute at the Stevensons' home in New Castle County. Officers found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room and administered life-saving measures, but she could not be revived. Her body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

William Stevenson, 77, was taken into custody on Monday and faces a charge of first-degree murder. He is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail.

Jill Biden, then Jill Tracy Jacobs, married William Stevenson in February 1970 when she was an 18-year-old student at the University of Delaware. The couple were married for five years before divorcing. She later met then-Senator Joe Biden in March 1975.

The office of Joe and Jill Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
