Modi Arrives in Melbourne for Bilateral Talks
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome upon arriving in Melbourne on Wednesday, ahead of key discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The two leaders are set to attend a business conference as part of efforts to strengthen trade ties between the two nations.
Albanese greeted Modi, stating, "You are the living bridge between our nations. You have helped reshape the economic map with Australia." The visit underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia.
Public Event 'Melbourne Meets Modi' Expected to Draw Thousands
Organisers in the Victorian capital anticipate around 25,000 people will attend a free public event titled "Melbourne Meets Modi" on Thursday, which both leaders are scheduled to attend. The gathering highlights the strong Indian diaspora presence in Australia and the cultural ties between the countries.
Defence and Security Agreements on Agenda
Albanese is also expected to discuss new defence and security agreements during talks throughout Modi's two-day visit. However, Modi will not be taking any questions from the media during his time in Melbourne. The discussions aim to bolster cooperation in areas such as maritime security, cyber threats, and joint military exercises.
Strengthening Economic Partnership
The business conference and bilateral talks are part of broader efforts to enhance economic collaboration, including the Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). Trade between the two nations has grown significantly, with two-way trade reaching AUD 30 billion in 2021-22. The leaders are expected to announce new initiatives to further boost investment and trade in sectors like critical minerals, education, and technology.
