The victim, a resident of a village in the Murshidabad district, went missing on Monday. Her body was found the next day in a nearby field, showing signs of sexual assault and strangulation. According to senior police officer Rajesh Kumar, "We have taken the accused into custody and are conducting a thorough investigation. Forensic evidence is being collected." However, the victim's family claims the police initially refused to file a complaint.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party have criticized the state government for its handling of the case.
