England secured a commanding 38-15 victory over Fiji in the opening match of the Nations Championship at Twickenham on Saturday, with head coach Steve Borthwick praising his team's second-half performance after a closely contested first half.
First Half Battle
The match began with Fiji showing their trademark physicality and flair, keeping the score tight at 14-10 in England's favor at halftime. Fiji's powerful carries and offloading game troubled the English defense, with winger Semi Radradra crossing for a try that brought the visitors within four points.
England's discipline was tested as they conceded several penalties, allowing Fiji to maintain possession and territory. However, the home side's set piece, particularly the lineout, provided a solid platform, and fly-half Owen Farrell's accurate kicking kept the scoreboard ticking.
Second Half Dominance
The turning point came early in the second half when England scored two tries in quick succession. Number eight Ben Earl crashed over from close range after a powerful maul, and then winger Anthony Watson finished a sweeping backline move to extend the lead to 28-10.
Fiji responded with a try from replacement back Josua Tuisova, but England's bench depth proved decisive. Replacement hooker Jamie George added a try from a driving maul, and Farrell converted to seal the win.
Borthwick Praises Team Character
Speaking after the match, head coach Steve Borthwick said, "We knew Fiji would come at us hard, and they did. But I'm proud of how the team responded in the second half. We showed great character and executed our game plan." Borthwick also highlighted the importance of the Nations Championship as preparation for the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
England's victory marks a strong start to their campaign, while Fiji will look to bounce back in their next match against Australia.
