Fatal crash in Essex field
Five people have died after a small plane crashed into a field in Essex, southeast England, according to emergency services. The aircraft came down in a rural area near the village of Steeple Bumpstead, close to the Suffolk border, on Tuesday afternoon.
Police, fire crews and air ambulance services attended the scene. A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "Tragically, there were no survivors. Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives."
Investigation underway
The plane, a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, had departed from a local airfield and was on a private flight. The cause of the crash is not yet known. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an investigation.
Local residents reported hearing a loud noise before seeing smoke rising from the field. The area was cordoned off as emergency services worked. A police spokesperson added: "We are working to identify the deceased and inform next of kin."
Impact and response
The crash site is in a remote location, and no injuries were reported on the ground. The AAIB will examine the wreckage and flight data to determine the cause. This incident highlights the risks of general aviation, which accounts for a small but significant number of fatal accidents annually.
