Synergy Denies Data Hack Claims, Investigation Underway
Western Australia's state-owned energy provider, Synergy, has firmly stated there is no evidence to support recent claims of a data hack impacting close to a million customers. The company is actively investigating the allegations following a cryptic social media post earlier this week.
Social Media Claims and Company Response
A Wednesday post on X by the page VECERT Analyzer, which describes itself as a Miami-based cybersecurity company focused on critical analysis and adversary research, alleged that 900,002 subscriber records had been accessed in a hack. The post claimed a hacker using the alias hackboy had obtained sensitive information, including:
- Full names
- Dates of birth
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Physical addresses
- Account IDs
- Payment balances
- Billing statements
In response, a Synergy spokesperson addressed the situation on Friday, emphasizing that investigations are continuing but there is currently no indication of data loss. The spokesperson clarified, Synergy is investigating a claim by an external party regarding a potential cyber security incident. Based on information available at this time, there is no evidence of data loss or compromise.
Ongoing Precautionary Measures
Synergy has reiterated its commitment to customer data security, taking all necessary steps to address the claims. The company is collaborating with the Office of the Digital Government and cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough investigation. The spokesperson added, Synergy's priority is the security of its customers' data, and is taking all necessary precautionary measures as appropriate. This proactive approach aims to ensure transparency and safeguard against any potential threats, though the initial findings suggest the claims may be unfounded.
