Record Crowds and Participation Mark 2026 Wollongong Aquathon

The 26th edition of the Wollongong aquathon has concluded, drawing an impressive crowd of over 4000 spectators to Wollongong Harbour. This year's event saw more than 2500 participants compete across five races, setting new records for both attendance and entries.

Community Spirit and Event Atmosphere

Event director Rob Battochio expressed his delight at the turnout, noting the vibrant atmosphere and enthusiastic support from the community. "It was beautiful to see a record crowd, the biggest smiles I've seen, and great weather," Battochio said. "The event has an incredible atmosphere. It's like a jigsaw puzzle that you just don't know if it's all gonna come together, and then suddenly you see it and people just get behind it."

He highlighted the diverse range of competitors, from elite triathletes and surf lifesavers to casual swimmers and runners. "You get a mix of people from all these different sporting backgrounds and some of them are absolute surprise packets," Battochio added, suggesting that future Olympians might emerge from such events.

Overcoming Safety Concerns

The record numbers are particularly noteworthy given recent safety concerns along the NSW coast, including a spate of shark attacks. In response, organisers implemented additional safety measures, such as drones and extra surveillance crafts, to ensure participant security.

Battochio emphasised that these precautions helped reassure the public, contributing to the strong turnout. "Just getting a record number of people is an achievement considering there's been a lot of talk about what's in the water," he remarked. "We proved that, by putting on a safe event, you can draw the crowd."

Looking Ahead to Future Events

With the success of the 2026 aquathon, planning is already underway for next year's edition. Battochio stated that the goal is simply to reach the 27th instalment, continuing to deliver a safe and enjoyable experience for the community. "We want to keep putting on a magic, safe, fun-filled event that the community loves," he said.

The event not only showcased athletic talent but also reinforced the strong community bonds in Wollongong, with spectators cheering on friends, family, and strangers alike. As Battochio noted, "The community, they all get behind this aquathon and that makes it so special."
