Dive Instructor and Student Rescued After 22-Hour Ordeal Off Queensland Coast
A dive instructor and his student have been dramatically rescued after they were missing for almost 24 hours off the Queensland coast. The pair were dragged away from their boat by powerful ocean currents, sparking an urgent race against time and a coordinated multi-agency search operation.
Details of the Disappearance and Rescue
Daniel Fitzgerald, a 45-year-old technical diving instructor from the Manta Lodge and Scuba Centre, and his student departed from North Stradbroke Island around 8am on Saturday. They were part of a group of four heading to the Flat Rock dive site, located several kilometres off Point Lookout.
By 9.30am, only two divers had returned to the boat, raising immediate concerns. A major rescue operation was launched without delay, with crews conducting extensive searches on the water and in the air throughout the day and into the night.
The search resumed at daybreak on Sunday, and the missing divers were eventually spotted by an Australian Maritime Safety Authority jet. The men were found approximately 7km out to sea and 22km south of Point Lookout.
Challenging Conditions and Survival
At the time of their rescue, the divers were battling extremely difficult conditions, including 2.5 metre swells and a strong southerly current that had dragged them far from their original location. They were airlifted to Main Beach on the Gold Coast, where they were joyfully reunited with their families.
A little sunburnt but otherwise safe and well, the pair had survived an incredible 22 hours in open waters. Despite Fitzgerald's extensive experience of more than 5000 hours of diving, nothing could have fully prepared him for this harrowing ordeal.
The men were equipped with twin air tanks to keep them afloat and dry suits, which were crucial in preventing hypothermia and keeping them alive in the cold, challenging sea conditions.

Fitzgerald's family expressed immense relief and gratitude after enduring a sleepless night of uncertainty. They told media outlets they are profoundly thankful to have both men back home safe and sound.
