Rinky Hijikata's Indian Wells Campaign Concludes in Fourth Round
Rinky Hijikata's remarkable journey at the ATP 1000 hardcourt event in Indian Wells, California, has concluded with a disappointing fourth-round exit. The Australian, currently ranked No.117 globally, saw his hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals dashed by English left-hander Cameron Norrie, who secured a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory on Wednesday, which translated to Thursday Australian Eastern Daylight Time.
Hijikata's Breakthrough Performance
Prior to this match, Hijikata had been on a scorching run, achieving a significant milestone by defeating Russian-born Kazakhstani 10th seed Alexander Bublik in the third round. This marked his first-ever victory over a top-10 ranked player, showcasing his rising talent and determination on the court. However, the physical and mental toll of his brilliant efforts to progress so far in the tournament became evident during the clash with Norrie.
Norrie's Dominant Display
Cameron Norrie, seeded 27th in the tournament, demonstrated why he is a formidable opponent, having previously stunned world No.6 Alex de Minaur in straight sets during the third round. Norrie, who clinched the Indian Wells title in 2021, broke Hijikata in the very first game of the match and maintained control throughout. He offered only one break point opportunity to the Australian, which Hijikata failed to capitalize on, while successfully converting three of his own six break chances.
Reflecting on his performance, Norrie expressed confidence, stating, "It was a match where obviously I was the favourite on paper and I just feel really confident all week. I've been moving well, the ball has been feeling so good off the racquet and I'm relaxed before the match so I can enjoy the match." He added, "(Hijikata) served really well midway through the first set to the middle of the second set, but I was giving him nothing on my first serve and kept taking confidence away from him. Then I managed to sneak in an extra break at the end which helped."
Norrie's Path Forward and Australian Hopes
With this win, Norrie advances to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells for the first time since 2023, where he will face either world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Ruud. After overcoming injuries in 2024 and making strategic adjustments to his game, Norrie noted that he has found a good balance, feeling physically robust while leveraging his experience at the top level of competition.
Meanwhile, Australia's aspirations for victory at this prestigious tournament, often regarded as the "fifth grand slam", now rest with Talia Gibson in the women's quarter-finals. The 21-year-old West Australian, who triumphed over world No.7 Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round, is set to compete against 14th-seeded Czech player Linda Noskova on Friday Australian Eastern Daylight Time.
