The Australian swimming community and international visitors are mourning after a fatal shark attack claimed the life of a talented Swiss athlete on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.
A Tragic Day at a Remote Beach
Livia Mühlheim, 25, lost her life in the waters off Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park on November 29. She was there with her 26-year-old partner, Lukas Schindler. The couple, both from Switzerland, were reportedly filming a pod of dolphins in the unpatrolled waters when the attack occurred.
Local reports suggest the predator was a three-metre bull shark, although authorities have not officially confirmed the species. The couple were using a GoPro camera to capture the dolphins at the time of the mauling.
Partner's Brave Rescue Attempt
In a desperate act of bravery, Lukas Schindler tried to fight off the shark. He sustained a severe leg wound but managed to pull his injured partner to shore and call for emergency help.
Despite his efforts and the rapid response, Mühlheim died from her injuries before paramedics could reach the remote location. Schindler was rushed to hospital, where he remains with serious injuries.
A Life Dedicated to the Water
Mühlheim was a former synchronised swimmer and an active artistic swimming judge. She was a long-time member of the Swim Regio Solothurn club in Switzerland. Her deep connection to the aquatic world makes the tragedy particularly difficult for those who knew her.
Her swim club released a heartbreaking statement expressing their profound grief. "With deep sorrow we inform about the death of Livia Mühlheim," the club wrote. "She died in Australia, in her beloved element of water."
Investigation and Aftermath
New South Wales Police are investigating the incident and have retrieved footage from the couple's GoPro. The vision shows Mühlheim swimming with dolphins, but it is not yet clear if the moment of the shark attack was recorded.
Authorities have indicated that beaches in the Port Macquarie region may be subject to additional monitoring as a precaution. Kylies Beach is known for its remote and unpatrolled nature, located within the national park.
Schindler, described in Swiss media as a committed athlete, had previously studied in Australia and run the Sydney Marathon. He had recently qualified as a dive instructor and reportedly holds a role in the Swiss Army.
The global swimming community has been united in offering condolences to Mühlheim's family, friends, and her partner during this devastating time.
