Mandurah Swimming Club Achieves Historic Three-Peat at Country Pennants

The Mandurah Swimming Club has cemented its dominance in regional aquatic sports by securing its third consecutive A-grade pennant at the prestigious 2026 Belt Up Country Pennants held in Karratha. This remarkable victory underscores the club's sustained excellence and team-focused approach in a highly competitive environment.

Record-Breaking Performance and Team Success

From February 27 to March 1, nearly 400 swimmers from regional clubs across Western Australia converged on Karratha, with over 600 spectators, coaches, and officials in attendance. The Mandurah Swimming Club, fielding a dedicated team of 30 swimmers, accumulated an impressive total of 980 points to clinch the A-grade pennant for the third year running.

Luke McDonough, a standout athlete from Mandurah, shattered the A-grade boys' 50m freestyle record with a blistering time of 25.31 seconds, breaking a record that had stood since 2014. This individual achievement complemented the club's collective success, highlighting the depth of talent within the team.

Leadership and Team Spirit Drive Victory

Mandurah Swimming Club president Samantha Maley expressed immense pride in the team's performance, noting that they not only won the A-grade pennant but also secured the A-grade relay overall winners title. "Our swimmers brought the heat to every single race, showing determination and teamwork," she said.

Maley attributed the club's success to the hard work and dedication of swimmers, coaches, officials, and families, with special recognition for Head Coach Hyojin Son. "We raced hard in the pool, cheered loudly for our teammates, and celebrated a fantastic weekend of racing, team spirit and club pride," she added.

Community and Government Support for Regional Swimming

The event was a collaborative effort, hosted by regional clubs from Karratha, Broome, Tom Price, Wickham, and Onslow. It received significant support from key organizations, including:

  • The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport
  • The Insurance Commission of WA
  • The Road Safety Commission
  • The City of Karratha

Kirsty Read, Swimming WA general manager, emphasized the importance of such competitions for regional communities. "That visibility matters, not only for growing our sport but for demonstrating the value of aquatic facilities within regional communities and supporting future investment by local governments," she stated.

Read warned that failing to leverage WA's unique landscapes and communities could risk losing opportunities for future generations, underscoring the event's broader impact on sports development and infrastructure.

Looking Ahead to Future Competitions

With this historic win, the Mandurah Swimming Club sets a high benchmark for regional swimming clubs. The success at the 2026 Belt Up Country Pennants not only celebrates athletic achievement but also promotes team cohesion and community engagement in sports.

The 2027 Belt Up Country Pennants are scheduled to be held in Geraldton, offering another platform for regional swimmers to showcase their skills and continue building on the legacy of events like this one.
