The Newcastle Jets have made their first major move of the January transfer window, securing the signature of experienced English midfielder Zach Clough on a multi-year contract.
A Perfect Fit for the Hunter
Clough, aged 30, has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal with the A-League Men club, the Jets announced on Wednesday morning. The player, who could be available for selection as soon as this weekend's clash with the Western Sydney Wanderers, arrives from Malaysian side Selangor FC.
"I'm delighted to be back here in Australia and with the Jets," Clough said in the club's official statement. "This move feels like the perfect fit for me at this time of my career. I want to keep improving and I feel like I have joined the right club for that reason."
Proven Experience at Home and Abroad
The attacking midfielder is no stranger to Australian football, having previously made a significant impact with Adelaide United. During his time there, he scored 19 goals in 85 ALM appearances, proving his quality in the competition.
His career began in England, where he gained valuable experience with several clubs. His professional journey includes stints at Bolton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, Rochdale AFC, Wigan Athletic, and Carlisle United, giving him a broad footballing education.
Addressing the Injury Crisis
The signing comes at a crucial time for the Jets, who are riding high in fourth place on the ALM ladder after winning four of their last five matches. However, the squad has been struck by a severe injury crisis, losing three talented young players—Alex Badolato, Christian Bracco, and Oscar Fryer—to season-ending ACL injuries.
Under ALM regulations, clubs cannot directly replace injured players unless the incoming signing is on a contract worth at least $300,000. The Jets had a roster spot open after defender Aleksandar Susnjar was granted a release before Christmas, paving the way for Clough's arrival.
Jets coach Mark Milligan welcomed the new addition, highlighting the qualities he brings. "Zach is a fantastic footballer who will bring quality and experience to the Club," Milligan said. "He can play a number of roles and will bring leadership to this young group, leading by example both on and off the field."
The club's interest in Clough was first reported by the Newcastle Herald on January 2, with talks understood to be progressing well. His signing officially marks the Jets' first business in the A-League Men transfer window, which opened on January 14, 2026.
