Newcastle Jets Soar: Both A-League Teams Land Home After Historic Wins
Newcastle Jets' A-League teams land home after historic wins

The Newcastle Jets are riding a wave of momentum as both their A-League Men's and Women's teams return to home turf this week following a series of landmark victories. Club veteran Cassidy Davis believes it's the perfect time to capitalise on the growing excitement within the Hunter community.

Jets' Double Delight Sparks Homecoming

In a remarkable 48-hour period, the Jets' flagship teams secured significant results to cement their positions inside the competition's top six. The men's side continued their impressive form with a 2-1 away victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium on Saturday, January 17. This result extended their club-record winning streak on the road to five matches.

Just one day earlier, the women's team created a slice of history, defeating Melbourne City 3-1 at AAMI Park. This marked the first time Newcastle has ever beaten City in the A-League Women's competition, breaking a drought that stretched back to City's entry into the league in 2015.

"It feels like when the men do well it kind of sparks everyone to get back around," said Jets women's captain Cassidy Davis. "You've kind of got to take advantage of those moments."

Men's Team Builds Unbeatable Momentum

The Jets' ALM campaign has undergone a stunning transformation. After a rocky start where their record read 2-5, coach Mark Milligan's squad has flipped the script, now standing at 7 wins and 6 losses from 13 appearances this 2025-2026 season. Their current run of form reads five wins from their last six outings, amassing 15 points.

The victory over the Wanderers was orchestrated by Eli Adams, who provided an assist for defender Joe Shaughnessy's first ALM goal in the 15th minute before scoring himself from a free-kick in the 38th minute. Despite a late goal from Wanderers' substitute Awan Lual, the Jets held firm, with goalkeeper James Delianov making crucial saves.

The only sour note was a hamstring concern for Adams, who was substituted at halftime as a precaution. Coach Milligan indicated the move was preventative given the player's disrupted pre-season.

Women Make History and Look Ahead

The Jets women's historic win in Melbourne was a comprehensive team performance. Goals from Kelli Brown (32nd minute), Libby Copus-Brown (66th minute), and Charlotte Lancaster (71st minute) secured the famous 3-1 result, cancelling out a Holly McNamara penalty.

For New Zealand striker Charlotte Lancaster, it was her second goal in as many games, following her match-winner against Sydney FC just days earlier. Captain Davis, who missed the City clash due to illness, praised the team's intensity.

"I think they rattled City a bit," Davis observed. "We ran them, got in their face, and stopped them doing what they do best."

Crucial Home Fixtures Loom

The challenge now is to maintain this form in front of a home crowd. The women face a demanding schedule, hosting Adelaide United at No.2 Sportsground on Wednesday, January 21 (7pm AEST). This will be their fourth match in a fortnight.

The men's team then takes centre stage at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday, January 23 (7:35pm AEST), welcoming Wellington Phoenix. Both teams remain in Newcastle the following weekend, with the men facing Brisbane Roar on January 31 and the women hosting Wellington Phoenix on February 1.

With both teams performing strongly and playing an attractive brand of football, the Jets organisation is hopeful the Newcastle sporting community will turn out in force to support the dual push for the finals.
