The Jets enter the January window, which opens on January 14, 2026, reeling from the confirmation that two more players have joined the long-term injury list. Scans this week revealed that Alex Badolato and Christian Bracco ruptured their anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs) during the team's 3-1 victory over Auckland on New Year's Day.
They will miss the remainder of the season, joining defender Oscar Fryer, who suffered the same devastating injury last year. Coach Mark Milligan expressed sympathy for the stricken trio on Friday, acknowledging the arduous rehabilitation journey ahead but praising their professionalism.
Milligan's Cautious Approach to Recruitment
While the injuries have intensified speculation about new signings, Milligan, in his first year as an A-League head coach, signalled a measured approach. He emphasised the club operates within a strict budget and will not recruit players merely to fill gaps.
"There's a few opportunities there, but as well, we want to make sure that we're not just bringing someone in for the sake of bringing them in," Milligan stated. "It has to be with the intent that they're a part of what we do long term."
Instead of rushing into the transfer market, Milligan indicated he would also look to promote from within the club's youth ranks, which have been back in training for some time. He highlighted players like Lucas Scicluna and Alex Nunes as candidates to step up, confident in the existing squad's depth despite the setbacks.
Cool Change for Melbourne Return
The immediate focus for the Jets is their away fixture against Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Sunday. The match presents a stark contrast to their last meeting in Newcastle on December 6, which was played in sweltering conditions above 30 degrees Celsius—a factor that drew criticism from Milligan at the time.
Forecasts predict a much cooler maximum of 18 degrees for this weekend's clash, offering relief for the travelling squad. Newcastle will be hoping to improve a poor recent record against City, having won only three of their past twelve encounters at all venues.
The Jets go into the match sitting seventh on the ladder, just two points outside the top six after a promising run of three wins from their past five games. Defender Tom Aquilina (hamstring) remains unavailable, while centre-back Max Cooper is suspended.
