A junior soccer club in Perth's northern suburbs is scrambling to save its season opener after a City of Stirling blunder left goalposts installed incorrectly, preventing pitch marking and disrupting pre-season preparations for 370 young players.
Goalpost Misplacement Causes Major Delays
The Dianella Junior Soccer Club has been unable to mark its three full-size junior pitches at Yokine Regional Open Space due to six goalposts being placed in wrong locations. One goalpost was reportedly out of position by approximately 35 metres, while others were mistakenly installed in the middle of hockey pitches. This error has forced the cancellation or relocation of multiple junior-friendly matches and delayed training sessions across several teams.
Race Against Time for Season Kick-Off
After three weeks of inaction, the goalposts were finally moved last Thursday. However, the club remains uncertain if the pitches will be marked in time for the scheduled round one clashes this Sunday, April 26th. A club insider expressed extreme frustration, noting that this incident follows a similar problem last year where the club had to re-survey pitches at significant cost through no fault of its own.
The club source stated: "We still have no guarantee we will get our pitches marked for the season kick-off, as our line-marking team is busy with other clubs. If the pitches are not marked, we could be forced to postpone round one matches, which would be a massive disappointment for our 370 players."
City of Stirling Apologises for Delay
A City of Stirling spokesperson confirmed that the goal locations were corrected after being installed using outdated 2024 positions. The spokesperson acknowledged the delay was excessive and apologised for the disruption caused during the club's hectic pre-season period. While the city maintained contact with the club during the resolution process, it admitted the issue placed unnecessary pressure on the organisation.
Broader Impact on Local Sporting Clubs
Other sporting clubs in the area, including the Stirling Panthers Soccer Club at Yuluma Park, have reportedly experienced similar problems. The City of Stirling, which supports over 150 community and sporting clubs across 59 active reserves and 28 different sporting codes, described the change of season as a busy time but emphasised its commitment to providing first-rate facilities and support.
The spokesperson added: "We are working to ensure all facilities are ready for the season ahead, though we recognise this incident has caused significant inconvenience."
