Canberra United to Host Home Final After Securing Third Place
Canberra United supporters have reason to celebrate as their A-League Women's team is set to host at least one more home game this season, despite a narrow defeat in their final regular-season match. The team will face Melbourne Victory in an elimination final at McKellar Park over the weekend of April 24-26, offering fans a thrilling local showdown to cheer on.
Season Finish and Upcoming Challenges
United concluded the regular season in third position, even after a 2-1 loss to the Brisbane Roar on Saturday. The match saw Canberra dominate with 60 percent possession and 10 shots on goal, but a header from star player Michelle Heyman in the 62nd minute wasn't enough to secure a win. Missed opportunities, including an injury-time penalty by Mary Stanic-Floody, allowed the Roar to clinch victory with goals from Aimee Medwin and Alicia Woods, boosting Brisbane to fourth on the ladder.
Heyman expressed relief post-game, noting that the result didn't impact their standing. "Today didn't really matter," she told Paramount+. "It was just more about staying healthy, keeping calm and collected, because we knew we had our third spot ... happy days." This mindset highlights the team's focus on maintaining fitness and readiness for the upcoming finals series.
Training During International Break
However, United faces an unusual challenge with a three-week wait before their final. Due to an international window in world soccer, the team will spend the next two weeks playing trial matches against boys' teams to keep their fitness levels up. Heyman, who recently returned from Matildas camp after Australia's Asian Cup final loss to Japan, emphasized the importance of this preparation. "We've got some games against some boys coming up for the next two weeks," she said. "For us it's just focusing on ourselves and continue to keep getting fitter and faster, and just all those one-percenters to make sure that we're feeling the best that we can for finals."
Heyman isn't part of the Matildas squad for games in Kenya from April 11-15, allowing her to concentrate fully on United's campaign. She expressed pride in the team's achievements, stating, "I feel extremely proud to be part of this club. It's always uncertain year in, year out for us, but to make it to the finals again, to come third in this league is a massive achievement for our team."
Match Recap and Team Spirit
The game against Brisbane showcased United's resilience, with players like Bethany Gordon and Hayley Taylor-Young contributing actively on the field. Despite the loss, the team's performance underscored their competitive spirit and determination heading into the finals. Fans can look forward to a high-stakes encounter against Melbourne Victory, with McKellar Park expected to be buzzing with excitement.
In summary, Canberra United's journey to the finals is marked by strategic preparation and unwavering team morale, setting the stage for an electrifying home final later this month.
