APL Takes Control of Central Coast Mariners in Interim Move Amid Sale Process
APL Assumes Interim Control of Central Coast Mariners

The Central Coast Mariners are now under new management, with the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) stepping in to run the A-League club. This interim move comes as the league body seeks a new, stable long-term owner for the Gosford-based outfit.

APL Steps In as Custodian

The significant change was confirmed in a statement released on Monday, January 12, 2026. The APL revealed it had taken over the Mariners "on an interim basis while a sales process is completed." This action followed notification from the club's current operator that it intended to forfeit the Club Participation Agreement (CPA), the fundamental contract for competing in the A-Leagues.

APL chair Stephen Conroy emphasised the board's commitment to protecting the game's integrity. "The APL Board is resolute in its commitment to fans and stakeholders to protect the game's best interests, and make decisive action to ensure the ongoing growth, stability and integrity of the A-Leagues," Conroy stated.

Club's On-Field Success Contrasts with Off-Field Shift

This administrative shift occurs midway through the 2025-2026 season, a period where the Mariners' teams have been performing strongly on the pitch. The men's side secured a memorable title double in the 2023-2024 season, while the women's team are the current defending champions.

Despite the ownership upheaval, fans can expect continuity in match schedules. The APL has confirmed that both Mariners teams will fulfil their upcoming A-League fixtures as planned this weekend, ensuring no disruption for players or supporters.

Expedited Sale Process for Long-Term Stability

Conroy outlined the rationale behind the league's proactive intervention. "As custodians of the game, we believe it is the best course of proactive action - for the short and long term interest of the club - to terminate the current CPA under the current ownership, and run an expedited and robust sale process," he explained.

The APL expressed strong confidence in the Mariners' intrinsic value and future prospects. "We believe in the value that Central Coast Mariners brings to the A-Leagues," Conroy said, highlighting the club's vibrant fanbase and proven competitive success. The league is already citing engaged local and international interest from potential buyers, aiming to secure a new owner who can guide the club to sustained long-term success.
