Broncos Legend Tallis Criticizes Reynolds' Sydney Trip After Rib Injury

Broncos legend Gorden Tallis has launched a pointed critique at Adam Reynolds' decision to travel to Sydney following a rib injury sustained during Thursday night's shocking loss to the Parramatta Eels. Reynolds exited the field late in the match after a heavy hit from Eels second-rower Kitione Kautoga, watching from the sidelines as Brisbane failed to secure their first win of the NRL season.

Scans conducted on Friday revealed no serious damage for the 35-year-old halfback, who discussed his condition during a Saturday television appearance. "All positive signs. There's no break there," Reynolds stated on Fox. "Fingers crossed that I get through the week. Obviously we'll pad it up and see how we go training on it. I'll get some big boys, hopefully not Payne Haas, but a couple of the other boys running at me."

Tallis Questions Leadership and Optics

With uncertainty surrounding Reynolds' availability for Friday's clash against the Melbourne Storm, Tallis, who also works for Fox, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation. "It's not great optics," Tallis remarked on Triple M's Sunday Sin Bin. "If he's really that sore — and I've done rib cartilage — for one, you don't go to the press conference. And two you don't jump on a plane and fly to Sydney to do Fox Sports."

When co-host Ben Dobbin attempted to offer a counterpoint, Tallis firmly dismissed it, highlighting the Broncos' off-season acquisition of Cameron Smith as evidence of a leadership void. "No, no, no, hear me out," he insisted. "You get yourself right. When you're down two losses and your club's under fire, and you're the leader, right, there's a reason why Cameron Smith got brought to the club — a lack of leadership. That's the leadership there where you would look and he's going to give himself every opportunity to pull this club back to where it is. That's not picking on him."

Broader Concerns About Broncos' Performance

Tallis also referenced coach Michael Maguire's history, noting past criticisms of his training intensity at South Sydney and the Wests Tigers. Despite this, he remains optimistic about the Broncos' ability to recover from their early-season struggles but pointed out their over-reliance on star player Reece Walsh as a significant issue. "Deine Mariner said it after the World Club Challenge — 'we've got to stop relying on one guy'," Tallis recalled.

The Broncos had led 20-6 in the first half against the Eels on Thursday, but a second-half resurgence led by Jonah Pezet, who is set to replace Reynolds in 2027, allowed Parramatta to snatch victory. Brisbane's defence, particularly on the right edge, proved vulnerable at Suncorp Stadium. Reynolds reflected on the match, saying, "I thought we started the game how we wanted to. We really made a focus on getting out of the blocks, applying pressure. Unfortunately we didn't do it long enough."
