Simi Sasagi has opened up about how a fitness challenge set by Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart transformed him from a struggling rookie into a key player for the NRL club.
From Struggles to Success
The 22-year-old forward arrived at the Raiders with high expectations but initially struggled to adapt to the demands of professional rugby league. However, a specific fitness challenge from Stuart proved to be the turning point in his career.
Sasagi recalled the moment Stuart pulled him aside and set a clear goal: improve his fitness to a certain standard or risk being dropped from the squad. The challenge was grueling, involving extra running sessions and strict dietary changes.
The Turning Point
"I remember thinking I had to do something different," Sasagi said. "Ricky was honest with me. He said if I wanted to play first grade, I needed to be fitter and stronger. That challenge changed my mindset."
Sasagi took the challenge seriously, working tirelessly with the club's strength and conditioning staff. Within weeks, his fitness levels improved dramatically, and he began to see results on the field.
On-Field Impact
The transformation was evident in his performances. Sasagi became more explosive in attack and more resilient in defense, earning a regular spot in the Raiders' lineup. His ability to play longer minutes and maintain intensity throughout games impressed both teammates and coaching staff.
"Simi's work ethic is second to none," Stuart said. "He took the challenge on board and has become a vital part of our squad. His fitness now is at an elite level."
Looking Ahead
Sasagi is now focused on continuing his development and helping the Raiders push for finals success. He credits the fitness challenge for not only improving his physical condition but also his mental toughness.
"It taught me that I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it," Sasagi added. "I'm grateful for Ricky's honesty and the support from the club. I want to repay that by performing at my best every week."
The Raiders will be hoping Sasagi's transformation continues as they aim to climb the NRL ladder in the coming seasons.
