The NRL Integrity Unit has launched an investigation into Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson, triggered by serious allegations from a whistleblower within the club.
Probe Launched Following Tip-Off
According to reports, the NRL's investigative body began its probe after receiving tip-offs that raised significant concerns about Richardson's conduct. The Sydney Morning Herald revealed the unit has already conducted interviews as part of its preliminary work to determine if a full investigation is warranted.
This development comes at a tumultuous time for the club's leadership. It follows the Holman Barnes Group's decision on Monday, December 5, 2025, to sack four independent directors, including former NSW premier and club chairman Barry O'Farrell. Richardson himself is preparing to exit the club.
Allegations Centre on Finances and Family Ties
The specific allegations reportedly focus on the club's financial dealings under Richardson's leadership. A key area of scrutiny involves invoices paid to the Enrichd Group, a marketing, branding, and digital consultancy. Richardson partly owns this company with his son, Brent.
While Richardson had previously disclosed this potential conflict of interest to the board, the whistleblower raised alarms about the amount of money being directed to the family-linked business for its services.
Further claims suggest the Tigers have also employed up to two other members of Richardson's family. In a significant escalation, Richardson is accused of using club funds to send a legal threat to a former staff member he believed was the whistleblower. That former employee then sought legal advice from ex-Wests Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis.
Fallout and Financial Implications
The Holman Barnes Group (HBG), the club's owner, is aware of the allegations and the NRL's interest. HBG deputy chairman Francesco Primerano confirmed the group is conducting its own parallel investigation.
"The Holman Barnes Group is aware of the NRL’s interest in this matter and at this point in time we can not comment," Primerano stated. The outcome of these probes could have major financial consequences for Richardson, potentially impacting his seven-figure termination pay-out from the club.
Both Shane Richardson and Lee Hagipantelis declined to comment when approached by The Herald. The NRL Integrity Unit's investigation remains ongoing.
